“ Every single day is brand new. Every day pregnant with possibility. With potential. Every day can go in so many different directions. We feel this more than ever nowadays, and especially at this time of year leading up to the High Holidays. In the Mishneh Torah, Rambam (Maimonides) taught: “It is, therefore, necessary for every person to see themself throughout the whole year as someone evenly balanced between innocence and guilt, and look upon the entire world as if it also is evenly balanced between innocence and guilt; thus, if you commit one sin, you will overbalance yourself and the whole world to the side of guilt, and be a cause of its destruction; but if you perform one mitzvah, behold, you will overbalance yourself and the whole world to the side of virtue, and bring about your own and their salvation and escape ...”
Creation, as this prayer reminds us, happens not just one day of the year, but every single moment of every day. It’s never to early or too late to re-discover what’s new in our own souls, and to renew our lives in whatever way we need.
